Upcoming Classes!

Hello everyone,

We have a lot of exciting classes coming up and would love for you to join us in the fun! This August we will be offering Painting Portraits with Julie Smith, Appetizer & Wine Pairing at 221, Tin Folk Portraits, and many more!

Painting Portraits: Students will work from a live model while learning to convey through color a sense of the person they are looking at. One model will be used over the three-day period. Students will do a black and white drawing in paint and learn to mix and apply color. (August 3 – 5)

Appetizer & Wine Pairing: This summer, Chef/Owner Eliza Gavin of 221 South Oak Bistro will teach a class that every good host should take. Eliza will present recipes for appetizers, finger foods and canapes that range from easy to moderately difficult. Wines will be poured to both contrast the flavors of the hors d’oeuvres and emphasize their subtler nuances. Students must be at least 21 years of age. Plenty of food will be served so skip lunch! (August 11)

Tin Folk Portraits: Found Object Assemblage with Visiting Artist Barbara Gilhooly: In this workshop, students will explore the fascinating world of assemblage art using found objects to create a sculptural portrait Barbara calls “Tin Folk”. The fun begins with the hunt for rusty and road worn metal finds! Bottle caps, wonderful smashed cans, wire, scraps of metal from cars, etc. Participants are encouraged to bring in their favorite finds. The portraits will be assembled from our found object treasures using a variety of connecting skills such as wire wrapping, rivets and different adhesives. (August 17 – 18)

Top Chef with Teens

Hello Ah Haa Friends!

It was great to get into the kitchen this week! I was helping out with a cooking class at the Elks Lodge. Chef Dave Hafer led me and some fabulous teenagers in creating over 15 delicious dishes. Each day we cooked a different part of the meal. On Tuesday we made appetizers, Wednesday we made soups and salads, Thursday was the day for entrees, and on Friday we made 4 spectacular desserts. We learned a lot from Chef Dave’s expansive knowledge and we got to enjoy yummy food everyday. The kids left with a packet of recipes and full bellies. Some of my personal favorites were apple crisp, quinoa with mint, cranberries, and orange zest, and delicious roasted potatoes, but I know the non-vegetarians really enjoyed the grilled flank steak with chimichurri sauce!

‘Til next time!

Paint Like Pollock

Hi Ah Haa Community!

My name is Gabby Cooksey and I’m an intern here for the summer at Ah Haa. This week I am doing a class with Brooke Ahana Bailey called Paint Like Pollack, and we have been. We have been painting hours on end because we are inspired by artist like, Stella, Kandinsky, Weatherford and of course, Pollock. There are two lovely kids in our class that have a real talent for painting because they are doing the best thing while painting, not thinking of where the paint goes. The kids just do and that’s what makes it amazing. We have painted on paper, canvas, the wall, and a huge strip of paper. Today, our final day, we will be having an art show so the kids can show their parents what they have been up too! They are going to be amazed.

Shapes and Color

Hello again, it’s me Tara. It’s been a busy week so far. I happened to walk into Flair Robinson’s class. She was running the 3rd Annual Mosaic Marathon. Flair is our mosaic expert here at Ah-Haa and I was extremely excited when she asked me to sit in with her class this week and make a mosaic. I can’t lie I’ve wanted to make a mosaic since I watched to 2nd Annual Mosaic Marathon last year.

It’s been a wonderful pleasure to sit in her class room this week. She’s an amazing teacher. I sat in the back where all the tiles were, the children would come up looking for colors or shapes to add to their mosaic. Flair would let them work for a couple of hours and then she would let them break to play a game. Today she had a scavenger hunt out of magazines. Yesterday they had a race how to make a balloon out of paper (I think). I found that the children really responded to her. She’s a great asset to Ah-Haa.

Tomorrow is Thursday and the last day of class. We will be grouting our art pieces tomorrow. I’m excited to see the finished product.

In Stitches

Hello friends of Ah haa!

As a summer intern for the Ah Haa school, I am writing to tell you about some of the classes that we offer here. This week I am helping with a sewing class with Ms. Jacque Young. There are four fabulous young ladies in the class. Conventionally, sewing is understood as a craft rather than an art form; nevertheless, like any art form, sewing requires practice, precision, and dedication. Each and every student has been proving her ability to learn the craft of sewing in full. It is so exciting to watch these skills grow. I am constantly amazed by their ability to sit down and focus on sewing a project for almost three hours at a time! I can barely sit still for that long. Their skills are already rapidly improving. On Monday we started scrunchies, and today we made pillows. I am so excited to see their final projects, but mostly it is exciting to experience the students’ feeling of accomplishment in creating functional goods while learning craft that will be useful to them for the rest of their lives.

Pictures to come!

Fondly,
Mia

The Ah-Haa children are here!

Hey, I’m Tara. I’m from Kentucky. I’m one of the interns this year. I had the opportunity to come here last year and was their Clayroom Management Intern. I am back doing the same thing. It’s only been the 2nd week and feels like it’s only going to get more intense as the weeks go by.

The children are so awesome here. Most live here and some come for vacation with parents or grandparents. Whatever brings them to Ah-Haa we are happy that they come. As an artist my background is ceramics. It’s amazing to see what children can make in clay. I just finished helping with a class and the teacher taught them how to make musically instruments in clay. They made a rattle and a pan flute. The pan flute is pretty cool. I work with a lot of texture in my own personal work and it’s such an inspiration to know that children want to create their own work with texture. Putting texture on clay gives another personality to their work. I am anxious to see the finished product and I hope they are too. I’ll have pictures up soon.

Thanks,

Tara

Foods Across the USA

This past week was full of excitement! Chef Bud Thomas kicked off the first cooking class of the summer with Foods Across the USA. Students were taught how to make fresh pasta, gluten free pancakes, lemonade, ice cream sandwiches, and even home-made pizza. In three weeks Chef Bud will offer another cooking class, Hand Made Pasta Lunch. If interested, you can register by phone or in person at the Ah Haa School. Don’t miss out!

Abstract Drawing

Week one of the kids summer art camp has come to an end. Today the kids got to explore the world of abstract drawing with Angela Erickson. This class allowed the students to let loose and express themselves rather than focus on creating realistic pictures. The results turned out pretty awesome if you ask me!
